New Club Forming in Florida!

Postby fenix303 on Fri Oct 30, 2009 11:21 am

You may conceive of FL as a tropical paradise where nobody keeps fish in aquariums, but to the contrary, on one of our main streets alone there are FIVE fish stores/pet shops in a one mile stretch, including a Walmart supercenter and 3 chain pet stores, plus a mom & pop marine hobbyist store. Ironically, there are only two active freshwater or fresh/marine societies for the whole state-- I'm trying to remedy this by starting a new group halfway in between them (57 miles one way and 200 the other way)- so far it's been rough going- however, the 2nd meeting will be held on Wed Nov12 @ 7:00 PM at the River Center of Burt Reynolds Park- 801 No. US highway #1, Jupiter Fl 33477. Anyone keeping tropical, native , or marine fish- or inverts- or water gardens (live aquatic plants)- or ponds is cordially invited. - The River Center is an information and community activities center operated by a civic group- and it is GORGEOUS- and full of aquariums-- if we can get them to agree on a reasonable rent, we'd like to make this our HQ- even to expand it by building a separate aquarium eventually.
You can call (561)- 743- 7123 for further info or directions.

How is the club coming along? We tried starting one here in Jax but it kinda fizzled out.

Hi- 12 ppl signed the sheet, but attendance is poor- I renewed my membership in the Gold Coast Aquarium Society (Hollywood,FL- 54 miles away)- so draw your own conclusions- nobody's paid dues yet, although it's been set at $15/yr. The club's made up of mostly saltwater enthusiasts. I was hoping for a 50/50 split.
Officers and committee heads haven't been elected/appointed yet either.

Twice- I'm afraid they regard us as enemies/competitors,when the opposite has been proven!
- i left flyers at a whole bunch of LPS's and not one person showed up from their referrals...
The only way seems to be word of mouth!!!
(that's a firm belief)-

Do you have a website? Even a basic one would make the club more legit and encourage ppl to come to the meetings. You could put it on ur flyers and post the link on local forums. Just a thought...

reef2reef has a section for state clubs I'd try there.
